It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we announce the passing of a beautiful mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and friend, Mary Hiscock, 83 of Glace Bay. Mary passed away on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at the Glace Bay General Hospital.

Born in Glace Bay in 1927, Mary was the daughter of the late Alex and Rose (Lahey) Burke, and was a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Glace Bay.

Mary along with her late husband John Roy ‘Bud’ started Bud’s Taxi of Glace Bay in 1974, which she managed and aided in the daily operation of Bud’s Taxi Service for 36 years. She took great pride in being a full time wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and was well known for her sweets, especially her blueberry pies and pineapple squares. Mary had a great sense of humor and will be remembered for her quick wit, she also enjoyed shopping, especially at the Wal-mart.


She will be sadly missed by her daughters Rose (Andy) Lloyd, Dominion; Linda (John) Jewells, Kim (Eddy McKillop) both of Glace Bay; sons John (Francie), Gary (Shirley), Terry, all of Glace Bay; brothers Bill, Baleine; Teddy, Sydney; Fred, Ontario; sisters Sadie, Ontario; Helen, Halifax; Theresa, Sydney; Marie, Main-A-Dieu; grandchildren, Andy, Jason, Larry, Sherri, Gary, Wendy, Chrissie, Angel, David, Tyler, Carrie, Alex, Jennifer, Bailey,15 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, John Roy ‘Bud’, infant son Gary Alexander, brothers Bob, Joe, George, sisters Viola, Lucy, Rachel, Margaret, and 2 siblings in infancy.

In honoring Mary’s wishes, cremation has taken place.

Visitation for Mary will be held Wednesday, September 01, 2010,from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay. A funeral service will be held 12 p.m. on Thursday in the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.

Donations in Mary’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of one’s choice.
