A. Manning MacInnis

A. Manning MacInnis, 87, life long resident of Newton Street, Glace Bay passed away peacefully at the Glace Bay General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family and friends, on January 14, 2012. Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Florence and Alfred MacInnis. At the tender age of 17, Manning joined several of his siblings and served Canada overseas during the Second World War as a member of the Royal Canadian Engineers. He returned home to Cape Breton in 1946 and commenced employment in the construction industry. He married Myrtle (Smith) in 1947. A master carpenter by trade, he founded Manning MacInnis Construction Ltd. in 1967, followed by Manning MacInnis Building Supplies and Myrman Realties Limited, the latter a company which he continued to operate until the time of his passing.

He served as past Master  and valued member of the Board of Trustees of the Tyrian Youth Masonic Lodge 45, past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Nova Scotia (1973), he received his 50 Year Jewel from the Masonic Order in 2008. He was a former member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Glace Bay Rotary Club, Board of Directors of the Community Hospital, amongst other business endeavors.

Left to mourn his passing forever are his daughter Shirley (Andy) Carras and grandchildren, Jennifer and Mark, Fall River, N.S., and son Gordon (Helen) and grandchildren Lisa, Brian, and Colin, Glace Bay. Dad (Grampa) was bigger than life and our hero.  Also surviving are his sister Marjorie (MacInnis) Johnston, Massachusetts, brother Milton (Dartmouth), sister-in-law Evelyn (MacInnis) Churchill, brother-in-law Joe Perkovich, and Myrtle’s sisters Sadie Harn, Muriel Peach, Reta Layes, Lena MacDonald, and Shirley Appleton, many nieces and nephews, and several special friends. He was predeceased by his wife Myrtle in 2006, parents, his sisters Edna, Stella, Vera and Irene, and brothers Ned, Gordon, Earl, Roy, and Harvey.

Visitation will take place at the V.J. McGillvray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve Street, Glace Bay from 2-4 and 7-9 PM, Tuesday January 17, 2012. Funeral liturgy will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday January 18, 2012, at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marconi Street, Glace Bay, Rev. Vernon Reid officiating. Cremation and family burial are to follow at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in Manning’s memory may be made to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, the Glace Bay Foodbank, the Manning Bursary Fund at Cape Breton University, or a childen’s charity of your choice.
