Mary Oblenia (Obbie) Cameron passed away at the Glace Bay Hospital on January 18th, 2012 after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Pius and Mary (Watson) McNeil and was a member of St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister, Obbie worked tirelessly for those she loved and was always ready to lend a hand to a friend or neighbor. Obbie lived in Georgetown, Ontario for over 20 years while she and Pat raised their three daughters before retiring to Reserve Mines and renovating her McNeil family home.

Obbie enjoyed contributing to her community as an active member of St. Joseph’s parish CWL.  She loved to dance, and to spend long days hard at work in her garden. Various siblings, nieces and nephews lived with Obbie and Pat over their 44 years together and enjoyed her hospitality and kindness. Her children remember their childhood home being often short of umbrellas due to her habit of handing them out to children caught in the rain on their way to school.

She will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her and will be remembered for her energy, kindness, strength of spirit and positive attitude.

She leaves behind her loving husband Patrick Cameron; daughters Michelle (Ryan), Patrice, Andrea; adoring granddaughters, Tess and Simone; siblings Jane, Raymond, Robert, Angie, Florence, Gilbert, Erma; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

In honoring Obbie’s wishes there will be no visitation. A Funeral Mass celebrating her life will be held 11 am Saturday, January 21, 2012 at St. Joseph’s Church, Reserve Mines with her brother Fr. Robert McNeil officiating and parish priest Fr. Daniel Boudreau con-celebrating. Interment will follow in parish cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Donations in Obbie’s memory may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Center or to the Palliative Care Society.

Hi Michelle. So sorry to hear about your mom. I hope you the family are doing ok. I always loved to hear your mom talk. I remember when I was young I use to think she was speaking another language. She was a wonderful lady. Take care.

Dear Michelle, Ryan and all the Cameron Family, I was sad to learn of the death of your mom. I'm sure the world will be a quieter place without her. From anything anyone ever said about her, she was a wonderful lady. From the pleasure I have had meeting you and your sisters, I know she was a wonderful lady. Her smile, her kindness and her open heart live on in all of you and in her granddaughters. I often enjoyed the comments that she would write about the pictures of the children... I know you will miss her, and I am sorry for your loss. You and your family are in my thoughts. All my love, Kim (and Steve)
